Certified Fibre Optic Technician CFOT Course
Certified Fibre Optic Technician CFOT
The Fiber Optic Association Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) course provides comprehensive training for individuals seeking to become certified fibre optic technicians. This intensive 5-day program, delivered at our state-of-the-art training facility in Crewe, Cheshire, equips delegates with the skills and knowledge to install, maintain, and troubleshoot fibre optic cable systems in internal and external networks for data communications and telecommunications. This course can be taken simultaneously as the COFNII Certified Fibre Network Installation Technician (CFNIT) course. By combining both qualifications, not only do you get awarded the FOA CFOT but also the COFNII Certified Fibre Network Installation Technician CFNIT. The course remains only 5 days for both qualifications, you will just have the opportunity to write both exams.
The course is designed for both new entrants and experienced professionals looking to advance their careers in the rapidly growing field of fibre optics. By the end of the training, participants will be well-prepared to sit the Certified Fibre Optic Technician (CFOT) exam administered by the Fibre Optic Association (FOA). This globally recognised certification demonstrates proficiency in fibre optic installation, splicing, testing, and maintenance.
Hands-On Training
One of the critical features of the FOA CFOT course is the emphasis on practical, hands-on training. Fibre Optics Training UK, a training centre designed to simulate real-world fibre optic installation scenarios, has external jointing chambers, poles, and an underground ducted network on-site. By blending classroom instruction with extensive workshop activities, the course ensures that delegates understand the theory and develop the practical skills needed to excel in fibre optic roles. This approach, combined with the experience of our training team, who have worked extensively in the field, allows participants to “hit the ground running” after completing the course.
Conclusion
Training in fibre optics and combining the Certified Fibre Network Installation Technician COFNII (CFNIT) and FOA CFOT course is an invaluable opportunity for individuals seeking to establish or advance their careers in the dynamic field of fibre optics. By combining comprehensive theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on training, the course equips delegates with the skills and certifications needed to excel in this rapidly growing industry. They are also a member of the Confederation of Fibre Optic Network Infrastructure & Installers, COFNII, the new trade association in the UK.
Whether you are a newcomer or an experienced professional looking to upskill, this course offers a pathway to becoming a qualified fibre optic technician and potentially pursuing specialised certifications. With the support of our experienced training team and state-of-the-art facilities, you can be confident in your ability to succeed in fibre optic technology.
Duration: 5 Days (even when combined)
Optionally, it can be combined with the Certified Fibre Network Installation Technician (CFNIT), which includes the City & Guilds 3668 Level 2 in fibre optics and free first-year membership as a COFNII-approved installer. This is your opportunity to achieve 2 qualifications in one go.
On completion of this course, you will receive your first year of Cofnii Membership at no cost.
Course Objectives
- Provide a solid foundation in fibre optic theory, including the principles of light transmission and the working principles of optical fibres
- Equip delegates with the skills to install correctly, terminate correctly, splice, and test fibre optic cables in compliance with industry standards and best practices
- Prepare participants for the FOA CFOT certification exam through a combination of classroom instruction and extensive hands-on training
- Enable delegates to progress their careers by becoming qualified fibre optic technicians and potentially pursuing specialized certifications in areas such as FTTx, data centres, splicing, and testing
COURSE CONTENT
The course curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for fibre optic technicians, including:
- Preparing multicore fibre optic cabling into external enclosures
- Fibre optic cable components and applications in various environments
- Current standards, terminologies, and compliance requirements
- Safe handling of optical fibres in internal and external environments
- Fibre optic cable installation procedures and best practices
- Preparation and termination of fibre optic cables, including splicing techniques
- Fibre optic connection inspection and loss budget calculations
- Introduction to OTDR testing and interpretation of results
- Fault finding using various test equipment like VFL, OTDR, and light source/power meters
Delegates can work with industry-standard equipment from manufacturers like Sumitomo and Fujikura, learning to correctly set up and use splicing machines, OTDRs, light sources, and power meters. Certification and Accreditation Upon completing the Fibre Optic Installation & FOA CFOT course, delegates will be well-prepared to sit the FOA CFOT certification exam. The FOA CFOT is a globally recognised credential demonstrating an individual’s expertise in fibre optic installation, splicing, testing, and maintenance. In addition to the FOA CFOT, the course can be combined with the City & Guilds, and COFNII CFNIT. Participants must complete a 30-question closed-book examination set by City & Guilds and undertake practical assignments for evaluation. Daily homework assignments also aid in identifying strengths and weaknesses, enabling targeted improvement with guidance from experienced tutors. Career Prospects and Earning Potential The demand for skilled fibre optic technicians is rising, driven by the increasing adoption of high-speed data networks and the rollout of 5G infrastructure. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of telecommunications technicians, which includes fibre optic technicians, is projected to grow by 6% from 2022 to 2032, surpassing the average for all occupations. Holding a FOA CFOT certification with another approved qualification can significantly enhance career prospects and earning potential. Many employers prioritise or require certification, recognising it as a testament to an individual’s expertise and commitment to the field. Certified Fiber Optic Technicians (CFOT) holders may also be eligible for higher-paying roles and better job positions than non-certified colleagues.
