HM Forces Resettlement Fibre Telecommunications Training

Leaving the HM Forces can be daunting, and it is crucial to determine which career steps you want to take to achieve your next career move after years in a different career.

We are here to help and guide you to your next career. Most of our organisation has been there and successfully gained a career in telecommunications. The industry offers a wide variety of roles, from fibre telecoms technicians or engineers to data communications technicians or engineers, each with its own unique opportunities.

Having the right qualification helps, as does being able to use your enhanced learning credits, which form part of your resettlement package for time served in the HM Forces.

We have various packages available for resettlement leavers who would like to do work placements near our training centre. ELCAS will only fund level 3 qualifications that OFQUAL approved. Our current package consists of three weeks in our training facility followed by a work placement with experienced teams in the local region.

But before you embark on a career in telecommunications or data communications, you need to be prepared to work in public spaces, mainly on public highways and various shifts, as most work is contracting. For data communications, this usually involves working internally with some outside work; again, most is contracting work, and for both industries, it is very rewarding financially.

Roles within the industry

  • Overhead cabling
  • Underground cabling
  • Passive Optical Network Build
  • Point to Point Network Builds
  • Backhaul Network (Spine teams)
  • Data Cabling installer's local area network
  • Data Cabling Data Centres
  • Fibre Jointing
  • Fibre Testing and characterisation testing
  • Offshore windfarms
  • Sub Sea cabling
  • Many more

One crucial factor when choosing to work in these industries is to be prepared to work away from home; not many employers work in their hometowns where they reside and be ready to work in all weather conditions, which can be challenging at times. There is no guarantee of work like many other training providers may tell you and may also tell you of high salaries; it is when contracting and work is mainly on synthetic rates where each work item has a nominal rate.  But you do get employers who do take on direct labour.

Look out for our free open days or simply call us to discuss options on which is the best career for yourself.
